The College
In the heart of the village of Sutton, on the northern outskirts of the city of Hull, there is a little piece of a bygone age - an attractive grey-brick building with beautifully maintained private walled gardens, providing a haven of quiet and security to its older female residents. This building, known as the College, owes its existence to the benevolence of a remarkable woman named Ann Watson. The daughter of a clergyman, and the wife of a Hull vicar, Ann Watson was a devout Christian and an astute business woman and landowner who wanted to help other Christian women long after her death in 1721. Through her Will she founded a charitable trust to provide accommodation free-of-charge to homeless elderly ladies - specifically the widows and unmarried daughters of clergymen. Today, 300 years later, Ann Watson’s Trust continues to help Church-going ladies in need. The Trust provides 11 individual, high-quality self-contained flats where residents can enjoy an independent lifestyle in a secure and tranquil environment, free from the worries of maintaining a property.
Where is the College?
The College is close to the centre of Sutton, close to the parish church of St James, with which it has strong ties. Sutton is a busy village with a wide range of local amenities which retains an air of rural charm although it is less than four miles from Hull city centre. There are good bus and road links to Hull, a vibrant, bustling city with good shopping facilities, and to York which is less than an hour by car and the east coast resorts of Hornsea and Bridlington. By rail Hull connects to the east coast mainline so is within easy reach of London.
